Number 7: Erdos 1

My Memphis research has made me aware of this really cool meme that started on Smart City Memphis (I think) and has people listing 10 reasons why they love Memphis. I find this way of learning about the city quite exciting... I am not only getting psyched about moving there but I also have a list of things to do and places to visit. The Civil Rights Museum is at the top of my list but I am also looking forward to more romantic happenings (sunset on the Mississippi River, anyone) and nights of musical hedonism (has anybody NOT heard of Wild Bill's yet?!).

Today I got an email from an old Sewanee friend of mine who's actually a native Memphian. She forwarded another Top 10 List that was authored by a friend of hers from high-school. There was the music, yes, and the affordability, and barbeque, and literature... But I was totally unprepared for Number 7 on his list. His Top 7 reason for loving Memphis?!

THE MATHEMATICS SCENE.

I really love math and am a total nerd, he says. So it totally rocks that the University of Memphis has the greatest number of Erdos 1 mathematicians in the world.

Now, I have no idea what makes Erdos 1 mathematicians so special, but guess what, we have the most of them. And I bet that's one fun fact about Memphis that none of you guys had ever heard before.

  1. The Erdos number 1 means that they've written a paper with Erdos. As Erdos was quite brilliant, that's a great sign.

But more importantly, yeah, Memphis has a very strong math community, easily the strongest in the South. So no shortage of nerds, that is.

  2. I was going to post about it but Nicodile beat me to it. It's sort of a "Seven Degrees of Kevin Bacon" but older and more nerdy. Erdos was a fascinating character - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Erd%C5%91s

  3. I just wanted to let you know how much I love your blog, I found it recently, and instantly liked it. I've spent the last 2 hours on flickr looking at your husband's photographs, wow, what a talent he has! You two seem like a great couple! Good luck in all your endeavors.

I don't know what I love more... the fact that Memphis has a great nerd scene or that not one, but TWO of my readers got the Erdos 1 reference!
