On April 12 we, Eastern European kids, get excited about Yuri Gagarin's first trip into space. In this picture, Gagarin is sippin' a cocktail accompanied by Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman in space.
Gagarin's first words upon returning to Earth were: "I am a friend, comrades, a friend!" He said that to a woman and a girl near where his capsule landed. The woman asked: "Can it be that you have come from outer space?" to which Gagarin replied: "As a matter of fact, I have!"

Ohhhh, great post! Made me nostalgic about my childhood. Is there an Eastern European child who hasn't dreamed of becoming an astronaut?
ReplyDeleteI was thinking about this, too. And, of course, as a woman I am really curious how much Valentina Tereshkova influenced what we imagined for ourselves as kids. Did the image of that very strong, capable, BRAVE woman set certain expectations for us: that we can and that we should dream big?!
DeleteI am looking for books on this subject: biographies but also non-fiction or academic work... Let me know if you know of anything that fits that description!
The only thing I know is something you've probably known already - Gagarin's farewell letter to his family http://sferanews.org/2011/04/08/yuriy_gagarin/ (scroll down to see it). Let me know if you find something else. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting this beautifull photograph. We will share it on our roadtogagarin facebook page.
