Eastern European's inexplicable love for fur, leather... boots?

Photographs by Ferdinando Scianna. 1987 via English Russia

Vicki was traveling and found herself in need of a warmer layer so she took herself shopping. She looked at scarves and things. For a moment she considered purchasing a fur vest:

Until I realized I had become every woman I see at the Russian store. And I became terrified. Why do Russian women love fur? What is it that brings out the fur coats, the fur collars, the leather?  And why do American women hate them?

I laughed out loud. I personally have somehow managed to avoid feeling drawn to fur and leather (against my better East European judgment). But, man, every year come fall.... I start looking for knee-high leather boots. It's like a switch gets flipped in my head and I can't stop thinking about it. Boots. Boots. Boots. BOOTS.

Vicki did some research on the fur thing and may have a lead.

  1. I don't think Eastern Europeans are that big on fur. I don't recall any friends from that part of the world wearing fur or leather. It's more of a Russian thing but the Russians may have a good excuse with those terrible icy winters though.

  2. Well, that's practical. And the Italians will wholeheartedly agree with that statement, I think :)
